Team Play & Match Play Rules Questions with Sue May

Here we go with another Sue’s Rules, our Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame rules official.

Women’s SNGA players are getting ready for Team Play for 2026. Since Team Play is Match Play, lets review a few Rules you may need.

In Match Play you may give putts and if you’re having a really bad hole, you can concede it and move on to the next hole.

You may play out of turn in Match Play if you have permission from your opponent for each stroke to be made.

You may not finish a conceded putt if it helps your partner. There would be no penalty to you but your partner would be disqualified from that hole.

Rules Issues in Match Play (Rule 20-1b). While playing a hole your opponent tells you that she feels you are about to break or have already broken a Rule of Golf and you disagree with her.

At this point you must make a decision yourself on how you want to proceed and play the hole out the way you think best. If your ball wins or ties or the hole, your opponent may make a claim by asking for a ruling. This claim must be made before teeing off on the next hole, or in the case of the last hole of the match, before the result of the match is final.

The players involved in the claim may not know the status of the match until the Rules Committee is notified and a decision is made.

Remember: In Match Play when you are in doubt of a Rule of Golf or how to proceed, you may not play a second ball.

Teeing Area: If a player plays a ball from outside the teeing area, the opponents may require the player to re-hit a ball from within the teeing area or have the player play the ball where it lies. In either case , no penalty is incurred.

When preparing for and making a stroke, a player shall not allow her partner to deliberately stand on or close to an extension of the line of play behind the player’s ball when the player begins taking a stance for the stroke and until the stroke is made.
